The Untried Solution to Preventing War: The Case of North Korea

So, what do you think? Is Kim Jong Un, the current leader of North Korea, acting rationally? He has declared war on South Korea and is saber rattling toward the United States. My take on all of this is that the guy desperately needs forgiveness therapy. Someone kicked him around in his past and he does not have the insight to recognize this. Did you know that he was raised to be a warrior? That, in combination with a furious heart, is a recipe for disaster.

His actions seem to be classic displacement and not rationally connected to missile launches in the slightest. Let’s send him a copy of the books, Forgiveness Is a Choice and The Forgiving Life……..It amazes me how too many world leaders lack insight into themselves. They impose their own personal wounds onto the world. The tragedy is that there is a solution: reduce the fury within caused by others in the past. So simple, so far from the world’s radar. (That’s why we need radar).

Thomas Merton used to say that we are not at peace with others because we are not at peace with ourselves. Forgiveness is a strong way to make peace within ourselves.

At church service today, the pastor made the statement that if people would deeply foster forgiveness in their hearts and if this spread through cultures, in all likelihood we would have fewer wars. It is a profound statement and challenge to the world.

Everyone in the entire world needs these two books that Dr. Robert Enright wrote. I have read them, and they are excellent. It is a process of learning how to properly forgive. The Forgiveness curriculum is also so important for all schools to be using. This curriculum is being implemented in some schools here in the United States, Belfast Ireland, the country of Liberia and other places around the world.

Mary Lou, I agree with you. These two books if taken seriously could change the level of hostility on the planet, bringing down the hostility considerably. Today I have been reading the reports out of North Korea and there is utter irrationality coming from its leader. He needs to read these books and take them seriously.

I just had the privilege of being at Dr. Enright’s talk at the Roundtable, University of Wisconsin-Madison. He talked of this North Koren incident and said this: Even if the bombs are silent, we still have a problem and that is the leader’s “toxic anger.” That anger will lead to other incidents there until the leader has the insight and the courage to see his anger and confront it. Toxic anger too often is at the heart of community aggression. We need to make forgiveness a conscious and deliberate part of societies.

As of today, April 11, 2013 (April 12 now in North Korea) , this angry young man has placed at least one missile in the “ready” position. The news indicates that no leaders have yet figured out his explicit purpose for acting in such a deranged way. I agree that he is probably furious from something in his past, perhaps his childhood, and now he is taking it out on the world. At the very least, he is a poster-child for forgiveness therapy. His actions seem to cry out for it.

I am beginning to see how the angry impose their unhealthy ways on other people. It just dawned on me that the more power a person has and the more angry he is, then the more destructive his anger can be in the world. With today’s fierce weaponry, the powerful angry person can destroy an entire country……just because he never confronted the unhealthy anger within. This thought amazes me. What can we do for the powerful angry people? It could save humanity and that is no exaggeration.

Is it possible to reverse moral depravity through forgiveness? This leader seems to be out of touch with reality. If his inner rage leaves because he forgives could the moral depravity actually leave him? What a blessing that would be to the people of his country and to the world.
