Enright Forgiveness Motivation Inventory

Description

The Enright Forgiveness Motivation Inventory (EFMI) is intended to assess the various motivations a person has for forgiving someone who was unjust. The EFMI is a 30-item scale with 3 items for each of the 10 Subscales. By the term Subscale, we refer to the items within each of the following 10 categories:

Self-Healing; Self-Improvement; Healing for the Other; Improvement for the Other; Improved Relationship with the Other; Protection for Others Outside the Family; Protection for Others Inside the Family; Forgiveness as Good in and of Itself, regardless of Consequences; Community Harmony; Consistency with One’s Belief System.

A high Total Score suggests that the participant is motivated across a large number of the motivation Subscales. Data from the United States were used to create the new measure. The psychometric evidence suggests that the 10 subscales are valid.

Because Dr. Robert Enright, whose team developed the tool, wants to share this measure with as many researchers and clinicians as possible, the International Forgiveness Institute is making the complete Inventory available at no cost. It is available in downloadable electronic format and can be accessed with a coded link that will be sent to you via email after you request a copy of the EFMI.
